Event Planning with Mind Maps (Tutorial + Example) - Focus

Event Planning with Mind Maps (Tutorial + Example) - Focus Whether you’re planning a wedding, a press conference  or a corporate event, maintaining  a good overview of all your resources, tasks, deadlines and stakeholders is key.  A mind map  is  a fantastic format for event planning  as it enables you to collect all information related to the event in a centralized place, invite your co-organizers to collaborate with you, and go efficiently  from brainstorming to execution. To make things a little less theoretical, were going to use a practical example to explain the method of event planning with mind maps. Imagine the following scenario: Jess and Jim are fashion stylists whove just started their own styling agency. To launch their new business with a boom, theyre organizing a press event for local fashion journalists where they can showcase their work. Looking for even more ways to use mind maps? Get inspired with these 13 mind map examples. Event Planning with Mind Maps Step by Step 1. Create and Share Your Mind Map Create a new mind map, write the name of your event in the center of the map and then create 4-6 branches around it. For our example, and for a lot of other events, the following organization of branches works well: Once the  basic structure of your map is finished, share it  with your co-organizers either via email or via link so you can brainstorm and work  out the details  together. 2. Note Down the Basics Use the INFO branch to note down the budget you  have available, the events date and time, and everyones responsibilities. This branch will subsequently offer you a quick overview of the most important event details. Tip: To determine  the best date and time for your  event, first check  the calendar to ensure you dont  have to compete with other major events or holidays. In our example, Jess and Jim would have made sure not to hold the event during New York  Fashion Week or Berlin Premium. 3. Whos Coming? Unless youre planning a  birthday party for your loner cat, the number of invitees is probably too big to write the name of every single person in your mind map.  A Google Sheet or Excel file is much better suited for a complete guest list with names, email addresses and phone numbers, and anyway, you can easily attach the file (or add a  link to the Google Sheet) to your mind map. If the event isnt too big, however, you may find it useful to  include an overview of the organizing team and key personell in the map itself.  You can add peoples  contact details in the notes section of their names to ensure the map doesnt get too cluttered. 4. Find a Suitable Location If you already know the location for your event, you can note down the address in the LOCATION branch right away. Jess and Jim from our example werent sure where to hold their event at first, so they used a separate mind map to brainstorm ideas and consider the pros and cons of each venue. After careful consideration, they  decided that renting a big photo studio in the city would be ideal  for their press event, as it would be easy to reach for journalists, not too expensive, and offer a fitting space to showcase their work. Jess and Jim already know a few studios in the city, so all they have to do is find out which one is available for rent at their preferred date and for an amount that fits their  budget. They create tasks for all of these to-dos in the LOCATION branch  and assign them to Donna, their assistant whos responsible for all things related to the venue. Tip:  Be sure to use  whole sentences or phrases in those topics that are used as  tasks. If  you decide to export the tasks into a separate  project management tool such as MeisterTask, you wont see the context of the mind map, so single keywords may not offer enough information anymore. 5. Plan the Program for  Your Event In the PROGRAM  branch you can outline  the main agenda items and note down the estimated  starting times of each one. The key to successful event planning is to be realistic with your estimations and keep in mind that things often take longer than expected. Now, think about all the smaller things that happen before, during and in-between those main items, starting at the beginning: How will  guests get to the locationâ€"do you need to organize any sort of transport? What will the weather be like at the time of the eventâ€"will you need  a cloakroom and attendant? Who will hand guests the welcome drink and how many bottles of each beverage will you need? Who will take away empty glasses from tables? Are there even tables at the venue, and if so, are there enough? You can add topics and tasks  to the agenda items themselves or  insert them into another related branch. Things that arent directly related to location, marketing, or people just go into the GENERAL branch of your mind map. Tip: A good way to find holes and oversights in your event planning  is to visit  the location and do a walk-through as if you were one of the guests. 6. Marketing  PR Which  marketing and PR activities youll need to plan largely depends on the type of event youre organizing. For a wedding, the only item in this branch might be Send invitations. For a large-scale conference, the marketing would include anything from setting up a website to creating an email drip campaign and social media profiles. In our example, Jess and Jim add the following tasks to their map: 7. Go from Planning to Execution Once the planning phase is concluded, its time to get to work. By now your mind map  probably holds quite a big number of tasks. If you want, you can just leave them right there  and use the map itself as your task management platform. In addition to assigning tasks to map collaborators you can add due dates and priorities in MindMeister, and indicate the  completion of tasks. For bigger events, however,  you may find that the mind map is not the best format to manage all tasks. Luckily, going from planning in a mind map to execution in a task management tool is simple and only takes a few seconds. If youve signed up for MindMeisters little brother MeisterTask (using your existing MindMeister login details) you can simply open the MeisterTask footer in the mind map and create a new project board. All mind map collaborators will automatically be invited to the project, and all tasks will be exported immediately. Poverty in Ghana Free Essays

In recent years, Ghana has emerged as a leading country in the Western and Central Africa region. It has developed its economy on a scale that could enable it to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) before the 2015 deadline. It also managed a smooth and peaceful political transition in 2008 and 2009, and has created a political and policy environment conducive to economic and social progress and poverty reduction. We will write a custom essay sample on Poverty in Ghana or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Ghanaian economy has grown at an average annual rate of 4. 8 per cent over the past two decades. By 2008 GDP growth had reached 7. per cent. The agriculture sector, which contributed 33. 5 per cent of GDP in 2008, remains the country’s major engine of economic growth. Rapid economic progress has all but halved national poverty rates, which have fallen from approximately 50 per cent in 1991 to 28. 5 per cent in 2006. In the last decade, poverty rates dropped by 8. 6 per cent in urban areas and by 10. 4 per cent in rural ones. Ghana’s growth and poverty reduction rates are probably the best that have been achieved throughout sub-Saharan Africa in the past 15 years. Where are Ghana’s rural poor people? Although there has been a substantial overall decline in the incidence of poverty in Ghana, poverty still has a firm grip on rural areas, especially in the north. There is a wide disparity in income between people living in the drought-prone northern plains, and those living in the south, where there are two growing seasons and greater economic opportunities. Who are Ghana’s rural poor people? Just over half the country’s population lives in rural areas. The poorest parts of Ghana are the savannah regions of the north (the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions), where chronic food insecurity is widespread and livelihoods are more vulnerable. Poor rural people have limited access to basic social services, safe water, roads that are accessible year round, and electricity and telephone services. Poverty is most severe among food crop farmers, who are mainly traditional small-scale producers. About six in ten small-scale farmers are poor, and many are women. Women bear heavy workloads. In addition to their domestic chores, they are responsible for about 60 per cent of agricultural production. More than half the women who head households in rural areas are among the poorest 20 per cent of the population. Why are Ghana’s rural people poor? According to the Government’s poverty reduction strategy paper, low productivity and poorly functioning markets for agricultural outputs are among the main causes of rural poverty. Small-scale farmers lack the technologies and inputs, such as fertilizer and improved seed, that would increase yields. Population pressure leads to shorter fallow periods or even continuous cultivation in the densely inhabited Upper East and Upper West regions, causing soil erosion and loss of fertility. Land degradation poses a long-term threat to farmers’ livelihoods and incomes. Only a small proportion of farmers have access to irrigation. Land ownership and land security are regulated by complex systems that vary widely. Many farmers lack rural infrastructure and equipment for storing, processing and marketing their products. In order to overcome their vulnerability and food insecurity, poor rural populations need help in sustainably increasing their incomes. Good opportunities exist to link farmers to markets and to modernize agriculture. The rural private sector could play an important role in making farming a profitable business through access to financial services, farm inputs and linkages to agroprocessors and traders. www. cfr. org Ghana is rich in natural resources and has one of the strongest emerging economies in Africa. The capital city, Accra, is one of the wealthiest and most modern cities on the continent, and is experiencing a period of rapid growth. Ghana is rapidly urbanizing. Despite this, most of Ghana’s poor live in rural areas without basic services such as health care and clean water. Small-scale farmers, who are affected most by rural poverty in Ghana, depend on outdated farming tools and lack access to improved seeds and fertilizers to increase crop yields. Our Work The Hunger Project has been working in Ghana since 1995 and is empowering partners in 49 epicenter communities to end their own hunger and poverty. Through its integrated approach to rural development, the Epicenter Strategy, The Hunger Project is working with partners to successfully access the basic services needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and lead lives of self-reliance. Scaling-Up the Epicenter Strategy Ghana is the first country in which The Hunger Project is scaling up its Epicenter Strategy to provide coverage to a set geographical area and reach significantly more people. In July 2006, The Hunger Project received a US$5 million investment to scale-up Hunger Project work in the Eastern Region of Ghana. By the end of the five-year commitment, The Hunger Project-Ghana aims to have mobilized enough epicenter communities so that each villager in the Eastern Region is within walking distance to an epicenter building. By the end of the second year of its scale-up program, The Hunger Project-Ghana had successfully completed construction of 12 epicenters. Scaling-up has presented a number of challenges to The Hunger Project-Ghana, such as acquisition of land and the mobilization of construction materials. Our staff, however, is equipped with the training and skills to continue to mobilize partners to end their own hunger in the Eastern Region. Empowering Women The Hunger Project-Ghana has pioneered the Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP), which empowers women to become strong leaders in their households and communities. The WEP is a series of workshops that focus on legal, civic and reproductive health rights as well as leadership skills for selected women. The trained women, also known as â€Å"animators,† then carry out community-based educational activities using drama, mini-lectures and discussions. These animators are also trained to provide counseling and distribute non-prescriptive contraceptives. Microfinance Through its Microfinance Program in 2009, The Hunger Project disbursed 1,834 loans totaling $146,421. Partners in Ghana deposited $23,589 in savings during the year. Of the epicenters that are operating in Ghana, three have government-recognized Rural Banks and are self-reliant. How to cite Poverty in Ghana, Papers

From the start of the interview JP shows his confidence and ease being a television interviewer. His speech is relaxed and welcoming and his use of filler Well and the pathetic phrase Im pleased to say, It is conversational and shows his desire to put his guests at ease. This sets a relatively informal tone for this Insight interview. This confident authority Is reinforced by paralinguistic features. His body language Is relaxed and he nods approvingly as he introduces BAA suggesting his awareness of her status as a political commentator who can make a valuable contribution to the abate. However his fluent and articulate use of formal SE falters slightly in his introduction of DRY. JP pauses before the words rapper and hip-hop artist smiling ruefully and apologizes sorry for his momentary hesitation. This seems to indicate his self-consciousness when using the terms. Perhaps suggesting that such vocabulary is unfamiliar to him and that he may as a middle aged, middle-class, white, political Journalist, feel foolish using words related to the contemporary music scene. She uses jargon such as social dynamic to create a formal atmosphere and to convey her assumption that the audience will share her understanding of such terms. This could be seen as alienating but might also indicate her respect for listeners and their engagement with and understanding of the topic. Moreover as the discussion topic Is Beams election, her vocabulary and language choices make us acknowledge Bags apparent superior understanding of the topic. DRY speaks NOSE. Dialect features like nit distinguishes DRY from the Standard English speakers, JP and BAA.DRY also address people by using the term man, this maybe because of his heritage Ghanaian but is perhaps more likely to be a feature of his upbringing in Bow, East London . It also may be used to get verbal feedback from JP as DRY is not In the television studio and therefore cannot pick up on the unwritten rules of conversation. It may also be used to elicit approval and confirmation that his points are valued and relevant. By addressing everyone by using the term man DRY wows equality towards the Interviewees The slang used and DRYS accent makes him seem to some less educated and his speech less rehearsed compared to someone like BAA.However his dialect is representative of younger people and identifies him as part of a contemporary urban community of users. This may show that dialect Is perhaps less likely to be linked to race and gender as they are to the young city dwellers in South-east England. Also the rhetorical question in the phrases used like point he has Just made. On the other hand the word maybe used as a filler showing his uncertainty. Bags tone throughout the debate is monotonous. Throughout her lengthy utterance her tone remains generally the same. This tone however is not necessarily successful. When talking at length speakers need to make their point interesting for the listeners to take notice and think about the points being made. BAA might speak like this because she is used to talking at length in political debates. Also she doesnt often pause for a long amount of time. She does this to try and keep the floor for as long as she can. BAA gets her point across by talking and exploring her points this makes her introductions lengthy, whereas DRY talks enthusiastically and energetically to try and make the audience take notice. BAA talks the most however her speech is not the most effective. DRY stands through all of the debate. When speaking he is never still and seems to bounce. This shows enthusiasm and passion for the debate. Also when he speaks he uses hand gestures to reinforce his points. For example, when DRY say l think it dont matter what color you are, it matters what color your heart is man. Throughout that speech he has his fist on his heart and bangs his chest repeatedly. This gesture makes the audience think about the point he is making and shows DRYS enthusiasm.

Feminine Manipulation essays

Feminine Manipulation essays Females are the root of all evil. This is the idea that seems to be portrayed in the tragic play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. They will only bring trouble and guide others, especially men, to disaster. Henceforth, due to the manipulative roles that women play in Macbeths life, his corrupt actions are out of his control and thereby inevitable. To begin, sparking Macbeths ambitions to rise to power are the three witches, or the Weird Sisters. All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!(Macbeth 307). This information strikes Macbeths interest as he now wonders whether this new prophecy is to be fulfilled. The prophecies promote his future violent behavior. This is the first example of women beginning to influence his will. Another advocate to Macbeths new purpose, as designated by the witches, is Lady Macbeth. When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man (Macbeth 317). Lady Macbeth is threatening Macbeths masculinity and manhood in order to bend him to her will. She uses this power over him to get what she wants; to be queen. In this manner, Lady Macbeth is behind the immorality of Macbeths actions. In another instance, Lady Macbeth ignites Macbeths murderous side. Macbeth, on his own, plans the death of Banquo and his son Fleance. Macbeth is so greatly under the power of Lady Macbeth that he even uses the same argument against his assassins as she did him. Ay, in the catalogue ye go for men...All by the name of dogs... (Macbeth 336). He is insulting the manhood of murderers in order to persuade them to kill Banquo. Lady Macbeth has been the mastermind behind the planning and now has manipulated him to where he will do as she would wish on his own. Characteristics of Squamates Reptiles

Characteristics of Squamates Reptiles Squamates (Squamata) are the most diverse of all the reptile groups, with approximately 7400 living species. Squamates include lizards, snakes, and worm lizards. Two characteristics that unite the squamates. The first is that they shed their skin periodically. Some squamates, such as snakes, shed their skin in one piece. Other squamates, such as many lizards, shed their skin in patches. In contrast, non-squamate reptiles regenerate their scales by other means- for example, crocodiles shed a single scale at a time while turtles do not shed the scales that cover their carapace and instead add new layers from beneath. The second characteristic shared by squamates is their uniquely jointed skulls and jaws, which are both strong and flexible. The extraordinary jaw mobility of squamates enables them to open their mouths very wide and in doing so, consume large prey. Additionally, the strength of their skull and jaws provides squamates with a powerful bite grip. Squamates first appeared in the fossil record during the mid-Jurassic and probably existed before that time. The fossil record for squamates is rather sparse. Modern squamates arose about 160 million years ago, during the late Jurassic. The earliest lizard fossils are between 185 and 165 million years old. The closest living relatives of the squamates are the tuatara, followed by the crocodiles and birds. Of all living reptiles,  turtles  are the most distant relatives of the squamates. Like crocodilians, squamates are diapsids, a group of reptiles that possess two holes (or temporal fenestra) on each side of their skull. Key Characteristics The key characteristics of squamates  include: most diverse group of reptilesexceptional skull mobility Classification Squamates are classified within the following taxonomic hierarchy: Animals Chordates Vertebrates Tetrapods Reptiles Squamates Squamates are divided into the following taxonomic groups: Lizards (Lacertilia): There are more than 4,500 species of lizards alive today, making them the most diverse group of all squamates. Members of this group include iguanas, chameleons, geckos, night lizards, blind lizards, skinks, anguids, beaded lizards and many others.Snakes (Serpentes): There are about 2,900 species of snakes alive today. Members of this group include boas, colubrids, pythons, vipers, blind snakes, mole vipers, and sunbeam snakes. Snakes have no limbs but their legless nature doesnt stop them from being among the worlds most formidable reptilian predators.Worm lizards (Amphisbaenia): There are about 130 species of worm lizards alive today. Members of this group are burrowing reptiles that spend most of their life underground. Worm lizards have sturdy skulls that are well suited for digging tunnels.

War and Peace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

War and Peace - Essay Example This paper studies the official catholic teachings on peace and war in the broader perspective of the globalised world. It gives special attention to the prevailing societal set up and emerging trends in the governments. The paper reviews the present teaching of the Roman Catholic Church then follows statements of the church bishop, Pope John Paul II. The Australian Catholic Church social justice council has two documents (already in the market) that outline the statements of the pope John Paul II that contains the teachings of catechism of the Catholic Church on the issue of war and peace. He published these documentaries when the Republic of Iraq was facing the threat of military intervention by a contingent of allied forces. This was because Iraq had failed to meet the inspection resolutions of the UN concerning weapons production and mass destruction of persons through wars (Marc, 2002:46-49). The document by the pope provides a basic source for the local communities on the justi ce groups and individuals seeking information on the stand of the church towards war and peace. It reviews the teachings of the church on the issue of war and peace as contained in the catechism with excerpts from the Holy Father and church leaders from across the world. The responses of the Catholic Church in regard to use of force are in two strands that answers the issues of pacifist and just war. Basing on the gospel values and the experience of the national and global violence, pacifism regards war as being unthinkable and unjustified. The just war tradition opposes the use of force in the engagements of war. The moral conditions resort to protect the innocent and restore justice (Shannon and Thomas, 2003:245-269). The teachings of the church on war and peace have changed over time and continue to do so in response to the emerging trends across the globe. For example the just war theory has formalized by the St Augustine continues to evolve considering the moral framework of th e changing nature and circumstances of war as a form of response to aggression. In the current society, terrorist acts of terror are common as the immediate mode of conflict resolution. In spite of these, the strict church moral requirements demand that war should be the resort and that peaceful diplomatic means should are necessary to curb the issue of war. The Catholic Church has called for peaceful resolutions of differences in order to prevent wars and not constitute the legitimate use of force (Rock, 2011:189-191). The Christian views in the issue of war and peace have diverged widely in the recent past due to the current world events. In the modern society, people hold many different opinions due to the crisis surrounding countries like Iraq. However, the roman church calls for the convergence of the Christian views on the judgments of the secular events formed in the teachings of the church leaders. The catechism has teachings of the Catholic Church on the avoidance of the wa r. The teachings offer total respect to the human life as God given and thus subject to total respect by all humans. This clearly reflects in the commandments documented in the catechism, which calls that You Shall Not Kill (n 2302). The respect for human life paves the need for peace and it only comes in the absence of war. Peace is a tranquility of order, which comes from the respect to human dignity and the respect for the individuals and the entire community (Marc, 2002:77-79). Peace comes out of Justice and love. Romanticism :: Romantic Period Essays

Romanticism It was a reaction against the Enlightenment and yet akin in that they both assumed life was designed for human happiness. However the Enlightenment placed reason at the center of human achievement. Romanticismm distrusted the human intellect and placed its value on the emotions and intuitive qualities. The natural and spontaneous was deemed good. The highest truths would be derived from the instantaneous of the individual. It gloried in the unlimited potential of the individual. There was an overall feeling of optimism and belief of a utopia. Romanticism reinforced the emotionalism of the period and its philosophies influenced the Transcendental movement. Romanticism began in the early 19th century and radically changed the way people perceived themselves and the state of nature around them. Unlike Classicism, which stood for order and established the foundation for architecture, literature, painting and music, Romanticism allowed people to get away from the constricted, rational views of life and concentrate on an emotional and sentimental side of humanity. This not only influenced political doctrines and ideology, but was also a sharp contrast from ideas and harmony featured during the Enlightenment. The Romantic era grew alongside the Enlightenment, but concentrated on human diversity and looking at life in a new way. It was the combination of modern Science and Classicism that gave birth to Romanticism and introduced a new outlook on life that embraced emotion before rationality. . Romanticism began to show the people that the Enlightenment had overstayed its welcome by leading the people to a future that offered a vision of mankind as being part of a group rather than an individual. G. W. F. Hegel, a German philosopher, rejected the rational philosophy of the 18th century because he believed in "Idealism". This involved looking at life in terms of the importance of ideas, not thought the narrow tunnel of materialism and wealth. By advocating Idealism, Hegel concluded that mankind could be led by his spirit, his soul, rather than the establishment or the status quo. Although Romanticism was perhaps conservative in nature, every participant of this swift and silent movement could relish in his own free and glorious vision of nature.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Romanticism was not a political movement or a reformist package offered by a group of dissidents; Romanticism was a time when mankind could restructure his outlook on life so that he was able to reach new heights of

Deviance, Labeling Theory, Secondary Labeling and their Effects On Society

Deviance can be defined as anything that flouts social norms and values. As an example we can take the Ten Commandments, that other than being a religious document is also a set of regulations to assist in creating a comfortable social climate for all people in a social environment. Simple laws such as not to steal, commit adultery, murder or abuse, are set in order to make sure that all involved are protected from possible harm. When one individual decides to break these regulations the balance is out of kilter. In this essay we will define and explain the terms: deviance, secondary deviance and labeling theory and attempt to ascertain their importance and effects within a social stratum. Deviance is, as mentioned above, a conscious disregard for the norms and values specifically designed to protect the public. Deviance is often seen in terms of juvenile delinquents who by means of deliberate or forced action break the laws that protect the public or community. Deviance takes its for m in a number of ways that are socially relevant such as drug abuse, rape, murder, theft and armed robbery. The father of labeling theory, Howard Becker believed, however, that sufficient rehabilitation of said criminals leads to another set of problems altogether. â€Å"Being a â€Å"criminal† becomes a person's master status. It controls the way they are identified in public. Others do not consider their other statuses — that of spouse, parent, or worker — only that they are first and foremost a criminal. † In this instance, as Becker believes the identity of the person becomes that of a criminal immediately after they are found guilty and have a criminal record. The person therefore undergoes an identity change and a moral crisis. The concept of self becomes divided by the Me and I being shifted from an integrated whole, to two very different people. One person is the ‘inherent good’ and one is the ‘public bad’, yet they are the same person. If one looks at crimes such as gang violence, one sees a specific stigma, one of fear by the public and another of status by those involved. The need to belong becomes greater than the need to be right. Those that grow up without an effective social purpose (ie.Those that do not have parents or grow up in inefficient parental guidance) search for meaning elsewhere. Those that are not seen as acceptable by their general environment will almost certainly find acceptance in a gang or crime syndicate. This is because it grants them some degree of importance and power. These individuals derive power out of others fear. In terms of other abuses of status, rape is a particularly devastating form of deviance where debate surrounding public labelling can be touchy to say the least.A crime of this nature, regardless of the age of the perpetrator is one that is on the increase today. Theoretically, justice should seek to curb violent and deviant behaviour, but as Becker believes, it often undermines the rehabilitation process because once the individual has been labelled as a criminal they tend to be seen as such years after the punishment has been served and inhibits their ability to earn a decent, respectable income once they have left prison. It makes sense that when a convicted criminal applies for a job after they have served their sentence, the label of ‘criminal’ is already recorded.Naturally, the prospective employer is dubious as to whether to employ them or not. In relationships too, it becomes difficult for a spouse, friend or family member to trust the person again, leaving the convict alone and jobless. There is an immediate loss of self esteem, social concept, self-concept and value to society. Becker and his fellow symbolic interactionists believe that this is a self-fulfilling prophecy which is nearly impossible to break. More importantly, is the consequence of this labelling. As an example, we could use 11 September 2001, otherw ise known worldwide as Ground Zero, to illustrate a social problem such as labelling is responsible for. After the Twin Towers bombing, it became known that the perpetrators were Muslim fundamentalists and possible al-Qa’ida insurgents. Once this became known, Muslim mean were searched at airports and appeared to be discriminated against by general public. This is neither party’s fault in the end, as fear is a defence mechanism that the public drew up in order to protect themselves from further threat. Also apparent though, is that not all Muslims are potential mass murders or are genocidal. The same becomes apparent on another macro-level with the Germans and Adlof Hitler. That not every German is a Nazi may momentarily have escape some families of victims. The real problem, however with labelling of deviants, is that since they are unable to regain social status and unable acquire employment, they are forced back into deviant behaviour. This is termed secondary devian ce. The self-fulfilling prophecy as mentioned before becomes apparent. With no job or social support, theft seems to be the first port of call in order to survive. In order to do this, the person may be forced to join another gang and the snowball starts to roll. It is extremely difficult to re-integrate a criminal with a record back into society, so where does the answer lie. If it were possible to change the attitudes of the general public, it could be the difference between an integrated society and a dysfunctional one. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the individual will choose to keep their name clear after they are released. In conclusion it can be seen that deviance, secondary deviance and labelling are all integral parts of societal functioning, but don’t necessarily yield any solution to the growing trend of deviant behaviour among juvenile delinquents. The process remains as follows: due to some fate of upbringing the person in initiated into a deviant form o f behaviour; they are labelled delinquents, criminals and rehabilitants; they are unable to change their status due to criminal record, so they revert to deviant behaviour in order to survive. It would seem that the only appropriate solution or cure for this deviant culture, lies in the upbringing.

Critical Analysis The Folktale Of Momotaro Free Essay Example, 1500 words

The legend such as the depiction of the opponents in various Japanese books and films also follows the same pattern in which their character, location, and appearance are always demonized while Momotaro is represented as a hero. For example, the opponents are seen as the demonic enemy and their location as the island of devils. In addition, Momotaro appears in many caricatures and films as a strong and youthful embodiment of the new Japan as compared to the British and American who are presented as feeble and aging. He is the ancient Japan equivalent of our contemporary Superman as well as a hero and cultural icon for both the children and adults alike. One of the manifestations of how the legend of the Momotaro promoted Japanese national identity was consequently used as a justification for the Japanese imperialism was seen during the Japanese colonialism of Korea, China as well as the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. America has the largest gap between rich and poor in the world, and the lower class has no means to an end they can’t afford health care or quality education. The upper class avoids talk about social class the most; wealthy people don’t want to admit that they are better off than others. While the lower class sees how much better off others are than them, but they still don’t like to label themselves. I agree with Mantsios that most Americans avoid talk about classes although I am not one of them. So she was forced to provide for my siblings and me on her school bus driver salary. My moth er had the best health benefits a job provides, her children never went without healthcare. I will say the majority of lower class family’s do not have this luxury, it depends on the job. My siblings and I have also had a quality education because my mother researched the school districts in our area before deciding where to enroll her kids. The lower class can get a quality education we just have to be determined to work hard. In order to get a college education as a lower class citizen I have to work a full time job while going to school full time. Essay about Iago Of Othello - 709 Words

Iago of Othello What makes a good villain? What qualities make one villain stand out from another? Is it their demeanor, ruthlessness, or the methods that they employ to accomplish their tasks? In any case, a great villain must leave the reader with a respect for their methods and a question about their motives. In Shakespeares Othello, there is one character in Iago that fulfills all of these qualifications. Iago is a wonderful villain because he gains others trust, relentlessly takes advantage of his peers flaws, and unapologetically causes the deaths of his counterparts in order to achieve his goals. The main weapon Iago used in his villainy was trust. This comfort is shown in his willingness to talk about Desdemona when the two are on night patrol. This reliance was something Iago exploited each time he had a chance. Every time a desire was expressed, Iago was there with a solution that always benefited Iago in the end. It was also Iagos work in stoking up the fires of revenge in Othellos belly regarding the affair between Desdemona and Cassio. For each situation, every word that was said was for the advancement of Iago and the destruction of all others. Iago also acts as a contributor to each characters flaws in the play. For example, in act two, Iago influences Cassio to have some drinks in order to start a quarrel between Cassio and Roderigo. In another example, in act three, Iago gets Othello to believe that there is an affair between Desdemona and Cassio by building on the suspicions and doubts that Othello had before Iago even spoke to him. Hypocrites by Imani Coppola free essay sample

It’s unfair that every review of anything Imani Coppola has ever recorded starts off with a mention of her sole, two-decade-old hit â€Å"Legend of a Cowgirl.† She’s come so far lyrically and musically since then. Still a teenager when she scored her 15 minutes of fame, Coppola won over a small fan-base with â€Å"Legend† and its parent album, 1997’s â€Å"Chupacabra,† which is best described as a set of cheeky short stories set to sample-happy hip-hop arrangements. Two decades later, Coppola is still making music, albeit for a smaller audience. Her latest release, â€Å"Hypocrites,† was crowdfunded via PledgeMusic and dropped this past summer. Not only is it among her timeliest records – it’s loosely a concept album mocking technology and hipsters – but it’s also among her best. Gone are the days of ’60s sampling and tales of cartoonish alter egos. In their place are wry commentary on our tech obsess ion and idiosyncrasies. We will write a custom essay sample on Hypocrites by Imani Coppola or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page For this record, her twelfth, technology replaces racism and the work world as her #1 enemy. On â€Å"Facetime Continuum,† she plays the role of a techie who unplugs her boyfriend’s life support so that she can charge her iPhone; the Auto-Tune, though it has destroyed many a song, works well in this context: it evokes T-Pain and adds to the song’s technological focus. â€Å"Swipe,† meanwhile, employs the same Auto-Tune while mocking many of the cliches Coppola has noticed on Tinder: â€Å"Take me on your boat/I wanna ski down your slippery slope,† she mockingly begs, knowing full well that those images are selected solely to impress viewers. Unfortunately, the novelty of the Auto-Tune wears off, so by its third and fourth appearances, it’s more grating than entertaining. For one thing, it often makes Coppola’s vocals difficult to decipher, which is a real shame, given that her lyrics are so often amusing and insightful. Additionally, as the album winds to a close, many of the songs feel interchangeable with their tinny production. Not even a sample of the â€Å"Ghostbusters† theme can pull â€Å"Like You Didn’t Know† (a diatribe apparently directed at Coppola’s cat) from the Auto-Tune wreckage. It’s no coincidence, then, that the highlights are the songs on which she foregoes the Auto-Tune for an approach that, while not exactly stripped-down, is infinitely more listenable. The best track is â€Å"Mixed Nut,† on which Coppola mocks hipsters while commenting on her own multiracial origins. It makes â€Å"#Selfie† sound tame by comparison: â€Å"I talk in upspeak, so it sounds like I’m asking a question †¦ even when I’m not.† â€Å"Just Feels Good,† another standout, successfully navigates the fine line between a feel-good song and an irritating earworm. Its lyrics (â€Å"The sunshine’s feelin’ my vibe/I got sunglasses on, my happy face†) are simplistic, to be sure, but the song possesses the self-awareness and restraint needed to make it palatable. Despite the fact that the album occasionally veers to the overly conceptual – from the Auto-Tune to the incessant heckling of hipsters – it’s a fun listen nonetheless, and one of the better records in her discography. At best, the album will make you think; at the very least, it will make you chuckle.

Immigration to the United States and New Americans free essay sample

Immigration in the early 1900s had tremendous impacts on the civilizations in Europe and in the United States. Immigration in any country can affect the economy and society. Domestically, there can be detrimental effects on the economy caused by the increasing number of immigrants. Also, nationally there have been problems in society with immigrants. But there are other views on immigration, stating that multiculturalism is increased and it strengthens society. Immigration has many different effects on a country, some good and some bad. Therefore, one may argue whether immigration has negative or positive effects within a country. Immigration has effected the United States socially and economically, significantly in the late 1900s some of the effects for the good and some for bad. Americans’ standard ways of thinking contain worries that the large numbers of immigrants are affecting the economy. In the source â€Å"The Case Against Immigration† Roy H. Beck states â€Å"an honest look at major trends during the recent mass immigration shows that ordinary Americans’ concerns can hardly be dismissed as narrow and unenlightened. We will write a custom essay sample on Immigration to the United States and New Americans or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page †1 He is stating that with the recent incline of immigration, people are not going to change their views on what they think of immigration. The large increase in immigration started in the 1970s and since then there has been a 5.6% increase in the total percentage of immigrants that make up the population in the year 2000.2 The recent incline in immigration has had significant negative effects in the economy. Many citizens believe that the large number of immigrants is conflicting with the job market. In source 98, Roy Beck states that the majority of people suffering from immigration are â€Å"poor children, lower skilled workers, residents of declining urban communities, and large numbers of African Americans.†3 These people are affected by immigration because of job competition. With more immigrants competing for the same jobs as the people effected, it diminishes the opportunities for citizens of the United States to get jobs at the wages they want. The group of people affected by immigrants makes up a large portion of the population. The text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† backs up the statement made by Beck with a statement about unskilled workers. It states, â€Å"many immigrants are unskilled laborers, the strong presumption is that immigrants are substitutes for domestic unskilled labor. Therefore, an increase in the number of immigrants will generally decrease the wages of  domestic unskilled workers.†4 This shows that immigrants are affecting many Americans that are unskilled workers, and with the large amounts of immigrants there is a much greater effect. The theory is simple but it is proven with statistics from the text. The text proves that immigrants are having effects on Americans. From 1970 to 1990 there was a large increase in population. The competition for jobs also went up. Native born citizens that are unskilled workers had their wages increased from $37,212 in 1970 to $37,551 in 1990.5 We must take inflation into account too. If the wages were not affected by immigration, we would have expected them to increase more significantly due to inflation. Over 20 years the wages only increased by about $300, this shows a direct relation between the number of immigrants and the salaries of native citizens. Many citizens believe that immigration has different effects on a nation. According to Paul Scheffer â€Å"world wide migration produces multifarious societies, then there is little to be said against it.†6 He also states that society must â€Å"create space† for everyone. He is saying that society does not have to adopt the traditions and beliefs of immigrants; we just need to accept that they are present and we must share the community with those of other cultures. It may cause problems if we are forced to make room for immigrants because not everyone believes in the traditions of other cultures. Those who have strong nationalistic beliefs usually have the most conflict. One who takes pride in the traditions of their country may not agree with an immigrants view. This can lead to corruption in a community. In the source â€Å"The Stasi Report† there is a scenario that displays the negative effects on a society by different cultural views. The source states, â€Å"wearing this symbol of their religious affiliation disrupted instruction and violated the cherished French principle of secularity.†7 This is a key example in showing how people cannot simply â€Å"make room† for those of different cultures because not everyone in a community agrees with their tradition and beliefs. The text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† states that as Hispanic and Asian immigrants improve their economic well being, they tend to move to better areas. Where African Americans â€Å"even is the have higher economic status- have continued to live in segregated neighborhoods.†8 This can show that there is a cause in discrimination against certain groups because of their choice to segregate  themselves. As they segregate themselves it causes a barrier with other ethnic groups. But as the new generations form, there is less segregation. Immigration is a leading problem in the segregation by choice. Not all opinions in an economical standpoint on immigration are negative. In source 98, Roy Beck states that that there are people who benefit from immigrants. He states the people that benefits are â€Å"business owners who have followed a low-wage labor strategy. Land developers, real estate agents, home mortgage officials, and others who tend to profit from population growth are winners.†9 This is stating that with the mass amounts of new immigrants, there is a large demand for housing. All of the jobs Beck lists are jobs that benefit from larger populations. In the text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† there is proof that there can be benefits from immigration. The text states â€Å"Immigration increases the supply of labor in the economy. More labor means more goods and services being produced so that national output rises.†10(137) The author is saying that goods can be produced more cost efficiently because the immigrants are willing to work at a lower rate than the citizens. When there are low wage labor strategies being implemented it helps the economy because producing products will cost less. Without immigrants offering to work for low wages, there would be a lot less workers in big production companies. With fewer workers there will be a smaller output on goods, which causes the price of goods to increase. Immigrants can affect the economy in positive ways as well. Socially immigrants have positive influence in a community. In source 99, Scheffer states that multiculturalists have a viewpoint that â€Å"immigrants enriched and strengthened society.†11 Immigrants have had many cultural influences that citizens have adopted. For example in the United States there has been an accumulation of different types of food, music, dancing, and many more things. These influences have been significant parts of most of our everyday lives. Immigrants bring education and talent to America. In the text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† there is reference to the many awards that immigrants have received in the United States. The text states that â€Å"the percentage of U.S.  prizewinners who are immigrants includes 26 percent for chemistry, 32 percent for physics 31 percent for physiology or medicine, 31 percent for economics, and, perhaps surprisingly, 27 percent for literature.†12 This shows that there should be no stereotypes in society against immigrants because many have achieved greatness in this country. There are many influences on countries immigrants have settled in. Immigrants provide benefits and disadvantages to cultures and economies. Immigrants cause competition for jobs with many citizens; they also cause conflict with those who do not agree with their culture. They also have positive influences, they provide low costing labor rates, and they help provide cultural diffusion that allows us to be more diverse as humans. Depending on the way one looks at the influences, they may have a complete different opinion than someone else on how immigrants affect a community or on a larger scale, a whole country.
